Walk down any pharmacy aisle and biotin is everywhere — gummies, "hair, skin & nails" pills, mega-dose capsules promising thicker hair in weeks. It's one of the best-selling supplements in the country, and almost all of it is bought for one reason: people want their hair to grow back or grow faster.
Here's the honest answer up front: for the vast majority of people, biotin does essentially nothing for hair growth. The only people it reliably helps are those who are genuinely biotin-deficient — and true deficiency is rare. Worse, the high doses in "hair" supplements can quietly distort important blood tests, including the one used to diagnose heart attacks. It's worth being fair about the limits on the other side too: there's no large, definitive trial proving biotin can't ever help a non-deficient person. But the burden of proof runs the normal direction — a supplement marketed for a specific benefit should have evidence for that benefit, and here it's missing. "No good evidence it works" is the accurate summary, not "proven useless."
So who does biotin actually help?
There's a real group of people for whom biotin matters — it's just much smaller and more specific than the marketing suggests. Deficiency tends to show up only in particular situations:
